Wireless Fidelity and Beyond!

Finally I was able to finish setting up the local area network of the JSAMHI. I used a linksys wrt54g wireless router as my main router to connect directly to the internet. Presently it is a mixed mode setup of wireless and wired network because the basement floor is still out of reach from the wireless network signal. So there is still a UTP cable connected from the linksys router to a network switch.

I;ve also setup the network by disabling DHCP and assigning a static IP address to all the workstations. I also made sure that WEP security is being implemented in the network to avoid unauthorized entry in the network and eat up our bandwidth.

Web Developer and Firebug Alternative for Opera Users

If you've read about web developers talking about how firefox has helped them improve their development skills with plugins like firebug and web developer. And if you are an Opera user and just wish there was a tool that is similar to firefox's firebug or web developer, well look no further, because Opera 9.5 beta is offering its own alternative with Opera Dragonfly.

What's good about it is that it is already integrated in the installer of Opera 9.5 which is unlike Firefox which you have to download and enable. It doesn't even affect the speed of the browser.

I have been an avid Opera user since I had it three months back, and I still enjoy using it. I encountered no problems since I started using it.

AVG has updated to 8.0!!!

If you have read my previous posts I mentioned that I am currently using Avira's Antivirus Security Software, and I've been visiting filehippo.com to get updates on some of the softwares I installed in my computer.

Recently I had to visit grisoft's free site to get virus database updates for my desktop computer at home and office. I was surprised to see that Grisoft has an update version on their AV, they have already released AVG 8.0 which has a much nicer UI compared to the previous versions. Since it is just a free version it limits its capabilities compared to its full versions.

I'll stick with Avira Antivir for now, but I'll continue to evaluate AVG 8.0.

Learn Open Source Programming

IMHO it is better if schools offer open source programming languages to students rather than teaching them programming languages such as visual basic or visual csharp. Aside from the fact that open source programmers have higher employment rate, they can also develop cross-platform applications, which is not true with languages as mentioned above. Although we all know that Microsoft Windows Operating Systems still dominate the market, it would be an advantage if students know how to develop for other Operating Systems as well.
